Our new outdoor space - Renovation blog part 6

Our new outdoor space - Renovation blog part 6

Hello, it has been a while since the last renovation update. In this blog, I wanted to share the build of our new deck. It is 36 sqm and has a lovely aluminium pergola overhead with movable louvers. It has been perfect for the summer and even those mild winter days.

Here is what the deck used to look like:

As you can see, the old deck was worn out and small. Our old outdoor setting hardly fit the area, and it was badly in need of an upgrade.

When starting the renovation, we hoped to use the existing supports, but when the old decking timber was removed, we discovered that the supports were rotten and would need to be replaced. None of the decking timber was salvageable.  The photo below was taken after the old supports had been removed. You can see the old concrete steps and just how small the original verandah was. With such an old house, it is fun to find hints of what the house looked like years ago.

New supports and joists being installed.

The concrete part of the old verandah was covered in ceramic terracotta tiles, and we decided to cover them with the new decking, so the deck started immediately from the back door. Just this one change made a huge difference in how it looked. Once the new supports were installed, the deck took another two weeks. being 36m2 is quite large. Wide steps were built either side of the deck.

Getting there. It was exciting to see it come to life. The photo below is of Motley, christening the new deck the first evening it was finished, just before work started on the pergola.

From an online retailer we purchased a large aluminium pergola and screens. Below, we got all the components ready to install. You can also see the rubble of the old concrete bbq we demolished.

Our builder helped install the posts, and my husband and I installed the louvers and screens. Photo below before screens were installed.

Completed Deck and Pergola Below with a new outdoor lounge and rug.

The deck is a wonderful, relaxing spot to have a coffee, or a glass of wine, and nibbles. It is well used.

We were fortunate to have found a wonderful builder, and he did such an amazing job on the deck that we hired him to help with our other house renovations (which will be detailed in another blog).
